Rare English Delft salt circa 1690

A Rare English Delft Salt, Circa 1690,

Applied with a simple loop handle, decorated in blue and green, the front inscribed with a mirrored cipher; may read as MR and WR, possibly for William and Mary, it might also be a sign of a pharmacy. Attribution to a pottery factory or individual potter can be very difficult at times especially on early examples, this may be because 17th century potters moved from factory to factory and decorated items in the same styles. Also the survival rate of these earlier wares is poor, 8.6cms.

Condition - good, usual minor wear found on Delftware, slight chipping to foot. No restoration or repair

An example of similar shape from the Rous Lench collection painted with an angel head in blue, this is now in the Longridge collection.

Whilst Liverpool bottles are of a variety of shapes and all have a distinct foot rim, so attribution to Liverpool may be More likely however Dublin should not be ruled out, 26cms.

Liverpool creamware mug circa 1765

A Liverpool printed creamware mug, Circa 1765,

Cylindrical form with slightly spreading foot, moulded handle, printed in black with' The Tythe Pig', the figures above a full verse, (as shown below) height13cms.

In Country Village lives a Vicar,
Fond as all are of Tythes and Liquor.
For Mirth his Ears are seldom Shut,
He'll Crack a jest, & laugh at Smut.
But when his Tythes he gathers in,
True Parson then--no Corn, no Grin:
On Corn, on Hay, on Bird, on Beast,
Alike lays hold the Churlish Priest.
Hob's Wife and Sow as Gossips tell,
Both at a time in Pieces fell;
The Vicar comes, the Pig he Claims,
And the good Wife with Taunts inflames,
But she quite arch bow'd low & Smil'd,
Kept back the Pig and held the Child
The Priest look's warm, the Wife look'd big,
Zounds Sir! quoth She, no Child, no Pig.

"In Greek mythology the satyrs are deities of the woods and mountains. They are half human and half beast; they usually have a goat's tail, flanks and hooves. While the upper part of the body is that of a human, they also have the horns of a goat. They are the companions of Dionysus, the god of wine, and they spent their time drinking, dancing, and chasing nymphs. The Italian version of the satyr is the faun, while the Slavic version is the Ljeschi."

A curious Liverpool Herculaneum pearlware jug dated 1806
A curious Liverpool Herculaneum pearlware jug dated 1806

A large Pearlware jug of 'Dutch' shape, lower body engine-turned, applied with an angular handle, inscribed in gold J Wood Emperor of Dog island and King of the Rummons 1806' within a green wreath, the sides printed in puce with 'Bacchanti' and 'love at liberty.'23cms,

Jugs of this shape are known to have been made at Herculaneum, see Alan Smith ,Liverpool herculaneum pottery, pls 30a,30b and 31. The significance of the inscription remains obscure, although it is possible the jug was a jokey present to the (dog loving?) J. Wood. J. Wood might be the John Wood noted as baptizing a daughter in 1798 at St. Nicholas's church, Liverpool, living at Harrington in the Park, very near to the Herculaneum pottery, so possibly a potter there. A letter from the Staffordshire deputy County Council Archivist cites the Staffordshire Advertiser for 18th October, 1806 recording the marriage of Mr James Wood of Rugeley marrying a Miss Marke in St. Paul's Church, Liverpool. Although, it was not possible for the Liverpool Record Office to substantiate this reference, the vendor's family do hail from Rugeley, so it is possible this is the Wood in question. (Bonhams 2004)

A good Staffordshire tortoiseshell whieldon type octagonal plate with ribbed rim, Circa 1765

A good Staffordshire tortoiseshell whieldon type octagonal plate with ribbed rim, Circa 1765,

These plates are sometimes referred to as Wheildon or Whieldon type wares, the correct terms is Tortoiseshell ware which have the same body as Creamware, but were decorated with metallic oxides. When the wares were fired the colours mixed and produced a streaky or mottled effect. These types of wares were produced by various manufacturers in the Staffordshire area and should not be referred to simply as Whieldon. The excavation of Whieldon's factory at Fenton Vivian uncovered several examples of this type of pottery which made it possible to attribute only a few wares of tortoiseshell toWhieldon, 22 cms.

A stoneware Bellarmine 17th Century Circa 1660

A stoneware Bellarmine jug 17th Century Circa 1660,

Globular shape, applied opposite the handle with a bearded face mask, over an oval medallion enclosing a coat of arms of Amsterdam. These were the everyday jugs of the 1600s in Britain, Germany and the Netherlands. They were especially common in taverns where they were used to carry beer or spirits. The bearded face is a representation of Cardinal Robert Bellarmine,(1542-1621) who was a bitter opponent of Protestantism. By calling the jugs 'Bellarmine' Protestants could 'toast' their faith whilst mocking Catholicism. It has been said that some smashed the jugs as a sign of contempt. 22cms high

A rare small pill jar of dumb bell form, painted in blue with a bird cartouche inscribed 'Extr;cathol' surmounted by a large basket of fruit. Cathol; short for Catholicon, which derives from the Greek word 'Katholikon', translating to 'universal.' The contents of the jar would have held what was known as a universal remedy, (usually a purge.) The 'P' denotes that the powder could be mixed with an inert powder and mixed into pills. However, the electuary, (the mixture), would have been a treacly medicine and the usual way to consume it would have been to dip a liquorice root in and suck the mixture off. Both the electuary and pills would have had a similar laxative effect, hense, the purging effect. For details of the recipe click here. 11.5cms
